Professional Recognition Credit (Exemption) in CIA Exam

CERTIFIED INTERNAL AUDITOR (CIA)

Exemptions in CIA exam for other professional qualifications

The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) allows exemption in Part 4 of the CIA exams if the students have obtained certifications from certain institutes and organizations. IIA has signed memorandums and agreements with many renowned institutes like ICAP, ICMAP, ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW and many others.

Students who are studying approved certifications are given exemptions in CIA exam Part 4 which relates to business environment and management of the business.

IIA refers such exemptions as Professional Recognition Credit (PRC4).

Students have to fulfill an eligibility criteria before they can claim PRC4 which in simple words is as follows:

  1. Student must have an approved certification in good standings i.e. there is no evidence of ethical violation against him
  2. He must fill and submit “CIA – Registration for Part 4 Professional Recognition Credit” form. Students can fill this form by accessing their Certification Candidate Management System CCMS profile

There are two important things:

  • Firstly, as mentioned above, students must hold an approved certification from such institutes which are approved by IIA. IIA has approved certifications instead of institutes itself as one institute might be issuing more than one certification. Therefore, a certain certification from specific institute is required to be eligible for professional recognition credit PRC4 or simply exemption in Part 4 of CIA examination course.
  • Secondly, only Part 4 Business Management Skills paper of the CIA exam will be exempted.
