Rare earths become rarePublished: 10 Sep 2009 12:02:02 PSTIllustration: Peter C. EspinaBy Sun WeiChina’s rising strength in rare-earth minerals supply, and its willingness to use that as "a 21st-century economic weapon," have attracted much attention in the past few weeks. The world’s dominant-rare earth minerals producer, China produces more than 93 percent of the global supply of rare-earth metals, a group of 17 "lanthanide" elements essential in high-tech devices and green products.China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is drafting a "Rare-earth Industry Development Plan 2009-2015," pressuring the rare-earth industry to consolidate to become more efficient and less polluting.Against such background, strategic thinkers in Western countries are starting to worry that China could impose a total ban on exports of terbium, dysprosium, yttrium, thulium, and lutetium, and may restrict foreign sales of other rare-earth metals.US technology news magazine Wired quoted an old piece of wisdom from the Strategic Air Command as saying, "When you have them by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow.""China’s regulation of its rare-earth metals industry does not aim at subduing any country, but protecting China’s national resources, " Zhou Shijian, senior researcher at the China-US Relations Research Center of Tsinghua University, told the Global Times. "The cheap export era should have ended. It is high time, and China has been waited for a long time."Powers’ metals strategic Fifty years ago, the world economy was established on steel, aluminum and iron. Today, rare-earth metals are reshaping the world economy.Rare-earth metals are the key to 21st century technology. "Without them, we wouldn’t have smartphones, hybrid cars or precision weapons," according to Wired.China’s decision could cause a crisis for high-tech development, according to Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper. The newspaper report says global energy competition has entered a new stage, because nations are already experiencing difficulties in acquiring rare raw materials.Strategic metals are also closely related to sensational techniques. In July, Chinese border police seized a quantity of the strategic metal vanadium bound for North Korea, foiling an attempt to smuggle a material used to make missile parts.Vanadium is a metal that strengthens steel and protects against rust. It is alloyed with steel to make missile casings, as well as high-speed tools, superconducting magnets and jet engines.China restricts the export of vanadium and other minor metals as part of a domestic policy meant to preserve strategic metals, encourage investment in processing industries and control international price fluctuations.West preserved for yearsWhile China is just starting to acknowledge the strategic value of rare-earth metals, developed nations have long been storing up their own strategic reserves. As the world’s second-largest rare-earth metals holder, the US accounts for nearly 12 percent of worldwide stocks. Early in 1981, the US categorized the metals that are of great importance to the economy and warfare and categorized them as strategic metals. The administration of former US president Ronald Reagan spent $100 million buying strategic resources, including 62 kinds of minerals, metals and other raw materials.Since 1999, the US began halting production for strategic and environmental concerns. By importing, the US protects its mineral reserves, according to CCTV.com.Japan imports nearly all its rare-earth elements from China, with two thirds of its annual imports in reserve for strategic purposes. Shangang Group buys Rizhao Steel to become China’s 2nd largest steel giantPublished: 06 Sep 2009 23:02:01 PSTShandong Shangang Group signed a recapitalizing agreement with Rizhao Iron and Steel Holdings Group Co. Ltd to buy a 67 percent stake in the latter on September 6. The deal makes Shangang Group the second largest steel enterprise in the country.According to the deal, the recapitalization will be in the form of capital increments. Shangang Group will fund the operation in cash, while Rizhao Steel will fund with its net assets after the evaluation and it will take 33 percent of shares after the deal. The agreement also includes restructuring Rizhao in terms of evaluating of recapitalizing assets, restructuring work process, staff and so on.According to the list of China’s top 500 enterprises released recently, Baosteel ranked No. 1 with revenues of 246.839 billion yuan, while Hebei Iron and Steel Holdings Group ranked the second place with 167.033 billion yuan. In third was Shangang Group with 120.505 billion yuan. With Rizhao Steel’s 47.187 billion yuan, Shangang Group’s revenue would amount to 167.692 billion yuan, exceeding Hebei Steel to be the second-largest steel giant in china. The deal between Shangang Group and Rizhao signals an important step for the former to expand its business to coastal cities from inland. In addition, it can also promote the development of Rizhao Steel and facilitate the restructuring and adjustment of the steel industry in Shandong Province.Rizhao Steel will be Shangang Group’s the most profitable asset after the shares purchased.Until now, Shangang Group has bought other major steel enterprises, including Laigang Group and Jigang Group Co. Ltd, in Shandong Province. According to Shangang Group’s plan, it will limit the output of these enterprises, weed out backward production facilities and establish a competitive production base in Rizhao of about 20 million tons in productivity. UPDATE 1-Taiwan Feb exports slide, some signs of restockingPublished: 09 Mar 2009 17:09:19 PST * February exports fall, less than January’s record decline * Restocking helped slow February’s plunge * Lunar New Year may have distorted data * No sign global demand is bottoming out, analysts say (Adds details, quotes) TAIPEI, March 9 - Taiwan’s exports fell 28.6percent in February from a year earlier, declining more slowlythan January’s record plunge as buyers restocked afterdepleting inventory too quickly. There was little sign of an improvement in global demand. Analysts said the February data could have been distortedby the Lunar New Year break, which fell in January this yearand February last year. In January and February combined,Taiwan’s exports fell 37.2 percent, the finance ministry said. Taiwan’s shipments, which are something of bellwether ofAsian trade, will probably keep falling, even though rushorders in certain tech sectors could offer some support, analysts said. ”Taiwan’s exports were the earliest to start to show thenegative influence of the global financial meltdown, and werethe earliest to show a clear degeneration,” said ChengCheng-mount, an economist at Citigroup, said. ”Even though February exports were better it’s still not aclear trend, I think that other countries’ exports willgradually feel the effects of the global economic slowdown,” hesaid. The median forecast in a Reuters poll of analysts was for a25.2 percent fall. Exports totalled $12.6 billion in February. Imports fell31.6 percent to $10.9 billion, giving Taiwan a trade surplus of$1.67 billion compared with $1.6 billion a year earlier. Economists in the poll had expected imports to fall 31.9percent in February and a trade surplus of $2.3 billion. South Korea, the first Asian exporter to release trade dataeach month, said exports fell 17.1 percent in February and weredown 25.6 percent in the first two months of the year. Analysts said South Korea’s exports profile was morediversified, helping cushion it from volatility in thetechnology cycle. Taiwan’s firms, such as Quanta Computer <2382.TW> and AUOptronics <2409.TW> <AUO.N> who help make 80 percent of theworld’s laptops and 40 percent of liquid crystal displays, havebeen hit by the global downturn. ”Looking ahead, rush orders and the restocking ofinventories in the liquid crystal display sector and part oftech industry might help spur demand in electronics components. That will help Taiwan’s exports improve,” said Lin Lee-jen,chief statistician at the finance ministry. The global recession has also pushed Taiwan’s DRAM makersdeeper into the red and forced companies to slash jobs, pushingthe unemployment rate to record highs and causing the economyto contract at a record pace in the fourth quarter. On Monday, UMC <2303.TW> <UMC.N> said its February salesplunged 57 percent, signalling more gloom for globalelectronics demand and Taiwan’s exports. In February, Taiwan sold 30.1 percent less electronicsgoods, which make up a third of Taiwan’s total exports than itdid a year earlier. In January the shipments fell a record 45.3percent. China, US not adversaries: ObamaPublished: 16 Nov 2009 14:07:22 PSTAfter meetings with officials and students in Shanghai, US President Barack Obama arrived in Beijing Monday evening to continue his maiden Chinese trip that is expected to elevate relations between the two countries to a new high.Obama will meet with Chinese leaders and exchange views on bilateral relations and major international and regional issues. His itinerary also has him visiting the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, two of China’s most cherished heritage sites. The president said economic recovery, climate change and stopping the spread of nuclear weapons would be the main topics in his upcoming talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao today. And he noted that the development of clean energy and the promotion of peace and security in Asia would be discussed.Monday, during his town hall meeting with about 500 Chinese college students at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Obama covered a wide range of topics, notably Sino-US cooperation and youth exchanges between the two countries.Starting with the historic relationship between the two nations, he highlighted common areas of concern, ”economic recovery, development of clean energy, stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and the surge of climate change, the promotion of peace and security in Asia and around the globe.”Obama stressed that more is to be gained when great powers cooperate than when they collide. He noted that the Sino- US relationship hasn’t been without disagreements or dif-ficulties, ”but the notion that we must be adversaries is not predestined,” adding that one country’s success need not come at the expense of another.”That is why the United States insists we do not seek to contain China’s rise; on the contrary, we welcome China as a strong and prosperous and successful member of the community of nations,” Obama said.He announced during the encounter that the US would further expand its youth exchanges with China by increasing the number of students studying in China to 100,000.He said young people in China and the US are the best ambassadors, and that cooperation between the countries should go beyond the governments. He also noted that different countries should learn from each other to promote cultural diversity throughout the world.办公室装修 ビジネスローン 铝合金升降机 passenger elevator テレクラ ショッピング枠現金化 kitchen cabinets lipo battery lithium battery -

UPDATE 1-GM to form China venture with FAW, invest $293 mlnPublished: 30 Aug 2009 16:35:19 PST* GM agrees to $293 mln light commercial vehicle JV with FAW* New China plant to add 100,000 units capacity by end-2010* New JV to focus on China, may export in future (Adds executive quotes, details)SHANGHAI, Aug 30 - General Motors said on Sunday it has agreed to set up a light commercial vehicle production venture with major Chinese automaker FAW Group, with total investment of 2 billion yuan ($293 million). The 50-50 joint venture, based in the northeast China city of Changchun in Jilin province, will make light-duty trucks and vans, GM said in a statement.”For us in China, this is an important complement to the rest of our portfolio,” Kevin Wale, president and managing director for GM’s China operations, told reporters in a conference call.”We are well established in passenger vehicles and mini commercial vehicles and we haven’t had a presence in the truck segment. Adding a truck portfolio rounds that out.”The venture will use two existing FAW plants in Changchun and the city of Harbin, also in the northeast, with combined annual capacity of roughly 90,000 vehicles, Wale said.A greenfield plant, currently under construction in Harbin, will add 100,000 units of capacity by the end of next year, he said.Vehicles made at the venture will carry the FAW brand and will focus on supplying the China market, but they could be exported under a GM brand through the Detroit automaker’s global network in the future, Wale said.GM is making Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac models at its flagship China venture with SAIC Motor Corp. It also makes minivans, pickup trucks and the Spark compact car in a three-way tie-up with SAIC and Liuzhou Wuling Automobile.SAIC-GM-Wuling sold 87,925 vehicles in July, up 90.7 percent from a year earlier, helped by Beijing’s stimulus initiatives to support the industry, including subsidies for buyers in rural areas.GM, which now holds 34 percent of SAIC-GM-Wuling, has been seeking to raise its stake in the venture.Domestic media reported earlier this month that GM had secured an initial deal to take over Liuzhou Wuling Auto’s 15.9 percent stake for roughly 300 million yuan ($43.9 million).Wale reiterated the U.S. automaker’s interest in raising its stake in the venture but made no further comment on the issue. 現金化 弹簧 kitchen cabinets for sale Rift platinum 搅拌机 ペニーオークション 风机 クレジットカード現金化 refractories china -

ANALYSIS-Automakers seek battery ties as cars go electricPublished: 16 Jul 2009 21:27:34 PST* Car, battery makers team up to secure competitive edge* Electric cars to lower bar for entry into auto sector* Batteries to be core tech but hurdles remain to car-makingTOKYO, July 17 - Rechargeable batteries could become the core technology for the auto industry if pure electric cars enter the mainstream — a prospect that has carmakers racing to team up with battery makers.Auto executives say that with fewer moving parts, easy-to-assemble electric cars may also lower the bar for entry into the cut-throat autos industry and make battery manufacturers the unlikely competitors for car giants.”I’ve said for years that Toyota’s rival will be Hitachi,” said Kenichiro Senoo, a professor at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo.”Or that in 2016, you’d be able to buy a car assembly kit in Akihabara,” he said, referring to Tokyo’s famous electronics shopping district.Already, China’s battery maker-cum-automaker BYD Co has entered the scene, bad news for automakers whose expertise lies in the complex task of fitting together thousands of components into a safe and reliable vehicle. Some see the shift to electric cars turning the auto industry into something resembling the PC sector, where Intel Corp and Microsoft Corp, which supply key devices across PC brands, take the lion’s share of the industry profit.Firms such as Panasonic Corp and Hitachi Ltd, which have the core technology to make batteries, could be the Intels and Microsofts of the auto industry of the future.Japanese electronics conglomerate NEC Corp plans to raise around $2 billion and use some of that money in growth areas such as lithium-ion batteries, a source and the Yomiuri newspaper said on Friday.LINKING UPLithium-ion batteries are seen as the most practical option available now for electric vehicles as they have the higher energy density required to feed the electric motors that power the car instead of an engine. To avoid being sidelined, top automakers are looking to tie up with battery giants to have a say in developing batteries that still face cost and safety hurdles for commercial viability. Most hybrid cars use nickel-metal hydride batteries, which store less energy.Early movers such as Toyota Motor Corp, Nissan Motor Co and Mitsubishi Motors Corp have set up joint ventures to produce batteries with Panasonic, NEC and GS Yuasa Corp, respectively.”When we were doing the research for electric vehicles (EVs), we believed we needed to have the core battery technology in-house,” said Andy Palmer, senior vice president and head of product planning at Nissan, which wants to be the world’s first automaker to mass-market zero-emission electric vehicles in 2012.”That was a strategic decision we chose to make. If Nissan is right … and zero-emissions is the future, then we’ve ensured that future by having that technology.”The Nissan-NEC venture is looking to sell its lithium-ion batteries widely in a move some say resembles an open structure that Intel succeeded with. Not to be left behind, Volkswagen AG has sealed non-equity battery partnerships with Japan’s Sanyo Electric Co and Toshiba Corp.Europe’s top automaker said in May it would explore options for a third partnership, with China’s BYD, which already has the endorsement of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway.Daimler AG now has a 6 percent stake in Tesla Motors Inc, a California start-up that has used its battery technology to create high-performance sports cars under its own brand. In danger of falling through the cracks is Honda Motor Co, which formed a late venture this year with Mitsubishi Motors partner GS Yuasa limited to batteries現金化 kitchen cabinets on sale panoramic elevator Rift gold air conditioner motor 外国為替 蝶阀 クレジット 現金化 实验室家具 -

Chinese Demand Boosts Tokyo, Australian StocksPublished: 16 Apr 2009 17:54:39 PSTAuthor: Vivian Wai-yin KwokHONG KONG — Japanese commodity producers and equipment makers gained Thursday on stronger-than-expected Chinese industrial output and fixed asset investment figures for the first quarter. But Chinese stocks slid as the market had largely already priced in more optimistic data out of China suggesting that the worst of its slowdown has passed to enter the second quarter. China’s GDP grew at the slowest pace since at least 1992, but was better than expected. That pushed some analysts to revise their full-year growth forecasts upward.More From Forbes.com: In Pictures: The Hottest Young Royals In Pictures: World’s Most Dazzling Royal Jewels In Pictures: Wall Street’s 20 Highest Earners Global 2000: The Top 25 Biggest Companies The Asian Fab 50 Japan’s Nikkei 225 average eked out a gain of 0.1%, or 12.3 points, at 8,755.26, after climbing over 3% at one point in the day. The rise in Tokyo followed that of the Dow Jones, which ended up 1.4% at 8,029.62 after the U.S. Federal Reserve said in its Beige Book that the drop in activity in five of its 12 regional districts appeared to be slowing. Steelmaker JFE Holdings gained 3.1%, or 80 yen (81 cents), to 2,700 yen ($27.35), on anticipated demand from China’s massive infrastructure spending. The yen traded near 98.71 against the dollar. NEC Electronics ( NELTY - news - people ) was bid up by 12%, its daily limit, by 100 yen ($1.01), to 930 yen ($9.42) on news that the chip maker was in final stage of merger talks with Renesas Technology Corp, a joint venture set up by Japanese electronics groups Hitachi Ltd ( HIT - news - people ) and Mitsubishi Electric ( MIELF - news - people ). Hitachi lost 2.9%, or 9 yen (9 cents), to 304 yen ($3.08). Mitsubishi Electric shares were unchanged.China posted GDP growth of 6.1% for the first quarter, the slowest pace on record. But analysts focused on stronger-than-expected fixed-asset investment and industrial output figures, and on the country’s aggressive expanson of bank lending. Some warned though that Beijing’s half-trillion dollar stimulus package won’t protect industrial earnings, which will likely continue to fall, which is bad news for shareholders. China also has to keep working on stimulating domestic demand, to offset the continued slump in exports (See ”China Bound For A Rebound?”).Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index shed 0.6%, or 86.63 points, to 15,582.99 at midday, with HSBC ( HBC - news - people ) rising 3.1%, or 1.11 Hong Kong dollars (14 cents), to 36.47 Hong Kong dollars ($4.71).Henderson Land Development ( HLDCY - news - people ) climbed 2.0%, or 70 Hong Kong cents (9 cents), to 35.30 Hong Kong dollars ($4.55), as analysts saw signs of a recovery in the property market in Hong Kong and mainland China. The Shanghai Composite Index slid 0.1%, or 1.92 points, to 2,534.13. Taiwan’s Taiex index gained 2.1%, or 121.98 points, to 5,997.17. The S&P/ASX 200 index of Australian shares gained 0.8%, or 28.20 points, to 3,775.70. Rio Tinto ( RTP - news - people ) added 1.2%, or 70 Australian cents (50 cents), to 58.05 Australian dollars ($41.72) after the miner on Wednesday posted weak first-quarter aluminum and iron ore output, which fell a steeper-than-expected 6% and 15%, respectively.South Korea’s Kospi index inched up 0.3%, or 3.63 points, to 1,336.72. Returning from holiday, Thailand’s SET 50 index lost 1.7%, or 5.29 points, to 313.28 during trading, as the country continues to clean up damage on the streets left from ferocious pro-Thaksin protests. India’s BSE Sensex 30 index moved down by 1.0%, or 109.84 points, to 11,174.89. Singapore’s Straits Times index dropped 0.6%, or 10.49 points, to 1,895.5.
